Head of the Department of Substantive Criminal Law – dr hab. prof Jacek Giezek

Head of the Department of Substantive Criminal Law at the University of Wrocław. Academic lecturer and scholarship holder of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and at the same time a lawyer conducting training as part of the professional development of lawyers. Former member of the Polish Bar Council and chairman of the Professional Ethics Committee of the National Bar Council. In the years 2007-2013 he served as vice-dean of the District Bar Council in Wrocław. Author of over 200 scientific publications published in Poland and abroad, mainly concerning theoretical and dogmatic issues of crime science, criminal economic law, as well as selected ethical and procedural aspects related to practicing the profession of lawyer. Editor and co-author of a commentary on the Penal Code, co-author of a textbook on substantive criminal law and a commentary on the criminal provisions of the Commercial Companies Code. Co-author of opinions on draft legal regulations in the legislative process. From April 2024, member of the Criminal Law Codification Commission at the Minister of Justice.

His scientific and research interests focus primarily on the following groups of issues: 1) causal relationship and objective attribution of effects; 2) the subjective side of the prohibited act and the related issue of subjective attribution; 3) selected issues related to the structure of the crime and its elements; 4) forms of committing a crime and grounds for excluding criminal liability; 5) issues of judicial sentencing; 6) selected issues of criminal economic law; 7) issues bordering on substantive criminal law and criminal proceedings.

University Professors

1. dr Anna Muszyńska, prof. UWr

The main directions of her scientific research are: 1) compensatory institutions of criminal law and the protection of the legal interests of crime victims related to their functioning; 2) criminal law and criminological issues of drug addiction; 3) protective measures of a therapeutic nature.

In 2008, participation in the work of the Codification Commission at the Ministry of Justice developing the provisions of the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction of 2005. Participation as an expert in the conference of the Minister of Justice on New legal regulations in the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction in pursuit of the objectives of penal and health policy, November 29, 2011, Warsaw. On November 16, 2009, the award of the Rector of the University of Wrocław for scientific, teaching and organizational achievements.

2. dr Piotr Góralski, prof. UWr

A graduate of the University of Wrocław. In 2005, he obtained a doctorate in law, and in 2006, he completed his prosecutor’s apprenticeship, which resulted in him passing an exam. Since 2017, habilitated doctor. Deals with issues of substantive criminal law and criminology. The area of ​​research interests is mainly the science of criminal sanctions (with particular emphasis on protective measures), the issues of crimes against life and health and sexual freedom, as well as the issue of preventing and combating repeat, professional, organized and terrorist crimes. In this respect, he cooperates with employees of university law faculties in Germany. He is also the supervisor of the Student Scientific Club of Criminal Law and Criminology. Juliusz Makarewicz and a member of the German-Polish Society of the University of Wrocław. Research and teaching stay at a foreign university as part of ErasmusTeaching Staff Mobility combined with obtaining a grant: University of Regensburg (June 2011, June 2013), University of Cologne (November 2015), University of Augsburg (July 2017, September 2018).

Assistant Professors

1. dr hab. Joanna Brzezińska

Author of scientific publications in Polish, French and German, including the monograph Infanticide. Legal and ethical aspects (Wolters Kluwer 2013, pp. 464). She studied at the School of French Law (l’École Droit Français et Européen des Affaires 2008/2009) and at the University of Paris – Dauphine (2009/2010). She conducted library research at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, as well as at the Bibliothèque Cujas (2010, 2014) and the Centrale Nazionale Biblioteca di Roma (2010, 2014). He is a member of AIDP (Association Internationale de Droit Pénal) and CEDIMES (Centre d’Etudes du Développement International et des Mouvements Economiques et Sociaux). Research interests focus on criminal law issues of protection of life and the typification of modified crimes.

2. Dr Dagmara Gruszecka

Doctor of Laws (2012), University of Wrocław, title of the dissertation: “Protection of legal rights on the eve of their violation. “Criminal Analysis.” Since October 2012, she has been employed initially at the Department of Criminal Procedure at the University of Wrocław, and currently as an assistant professor at the Department of Substantive Criminal Law. She also studied in Germany – Universität Regensburg (2007). Scholarship holder of the Humboldt Foundation (2017) – research stay at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, at the Institute of Criminal Law, Chair of Prof. Gunnar Duttge. In his scientific work, he deals with the issues of both substantive criminal law and criminal proceedings, in the former field, especially issues related to the expansion of criminalization and structures of exposure to the threat of legal goods and the model of objective and subjective assignment of criminal liability, in particular in the context of the liability of collective entities. . Additional areas of research interest include criminal procedural issues, including primarily questions about the model of the criminal trial, evidence law and appeal proceedings, as well as comparative law analyzes of the criminal trial of German-speaking countries. Head of the Grant “Limits of privatization of the criminal process – in search of efficiency and justice of the system” (Sonata NCN grant 2016-2019), Contractor in the Grant “Model of permissible interference in the rights and freedoms of an individual in the criminal process” (Opus NCN grant 2014-2018). She completed her legal training and has been working as a lawyer since 2012. He also serves as the Disciplinary Spokesperson for students and doctoral students of the University of Wrocław.

3. Dr Rajnhardt Kokot

His scientific and research interests focus on the issues of criminal law protection of human life and health as well as the issues of statutory and judicial punishment. They are expressed in scientific publications devoted to these issues and other forms of scientific research (including organization of scientific conferences, papers presented during scientific meetings, participation in community discussions, supervision of the Scientific Circle of Substantive Criminal Law, monographic lectures).

4. Dr Konrad Lipiński

A graduate of the University of Wrocław, in June 2018 he defended his doctoral thesis with distinction, prepared under the supervision of prof. Ph.D. Jacek Giezek entitled Personal role models in criminal law. Assistant professor at the Department of Substantive Criminal Law, attorney running a law firm in Wrocław. Deputy Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee for Students in the 2021-2024 term. He is a member of AIDP (Association Internationale de Droit Pénal). Scientific interests: issues of crime science, in particular the dogmatic structure of crime and forms of committing a prohibited act, objective and subjective assignment of criminal responsibility, selected issues in the field of criminal procedure.

5. Dr Alicja Limburska

A graduate of the University of Wrocław, in October 2022 she defended her doctoral thesis with honors entitled Risk acceptance and its criminal law consequences, prepared under the supervision of prof. Dr. hab. Jacek Giezek and defended with distinction). Attorney at the Bar Association in Wrocław. He is a member of AIDP (Association Internationale de Droit Pénal). Research interests: issues of crime science, criminalization theory, interdisciplinary research on criminal law.
